    Can’t make it to the Aquarium? Loved your visit and want to extend the fun? The beach is within reach through the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores' Outreach program. Let our education staff bring one of our fun, interactive programs to your classroom, group, or event.

    Outreach pricing depends on several factors including travel, staffing, and special requests.

    Outreach

    Journey Through North Carolina

    Take a "journey" through the great state of North Carolina. Starting with the mountains, explore the different habitats and ecosystems of the state, eventually ending at the sea.

    Swamp Symphony

    Recommended for grades K-6. 

     

    Explore the similarities and differences between reptiles and amphibians. Learn about their life cycles and adaptations after transforming your space into a swamp with interactive props.

    Scaly Skins, No Fins

    Reptiles, although scaly, are not scary! Have a close encounter with some of North Carolina's native reptiles. Discover where they live, what they eat, and which ones may be hiding in your own backyard.

    Awesome Adaptations

    How does a sea star eat if they don't have teeth? How do owls sneak up on their prey? Through adaptations! Learn about the amazing adaptations that many of our aquarium residents have and how those adaptations help them survive.

    Habitat Heroes

    Learn how to be a habitat hero and how we can help protect different animals’ homes.

    Sea Turtle Trails

    Sea turtles are some of the oldest and most fascinating reptiles on the planet. Find out where hatchlings go during their time at sea, and what brings them back to the same beaches where they hatched.

    Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out

    Recommended for children ages 2-7. 

     

    Join a sea turtle hatchling on its journey from a little hatchling to a fully grown adult as we read the book "Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out!" by April Pulley Sayre. The program will end with an up-close look at one of our ambassador turtles.

    Small Group Programs

    Squid Squish

    What does a squid and an octopus have in common? Find out while exploring the amazing world of mollusks. Participants will examine the anatomy and adaptations of these cephalopods through scientific investigation and a squid dissection.

    Owl Pellet Dissection Lab

    "Whooo" coughed up that pellet? Why, an owl did of course! Participants will explore the amazing adaptations of owls through biofacts, interactive educational activities, and an owl pellet dissection.

    Hermit Crab & Friends

    Recommended for children ages 3-6.

     

    Join a hermit crab on its journey to turn its "plain shell" into a beautiful home. Students will enjoy a lively, interactive reading of Eric Carle's book, "A House for Hermit Crab." Throughout the story, participants learn about friendship and a variety of undersea invertebrates.

    Investigating Invertebrates

    Sea stars, sea snails, and crabs oh my! Participants will learn how to classify local marine invertebrates while working in small groups to observe crustaceans, echinoderms, and mollusks.

    Water Wonders

    Recommended for children ages 3-7. 

     

    It's more than just a glass of water! Clean water is important to our world's survival. Explore how animals can use water's unique properties to their advantage. Through scientific investigation, students will participate in water quality testing.

    Virtual Programs

    Virtual Animal Cameos

    Cameos are a casual and fun way to learn about our animal ambassadors. This 30-minute program allows time for you and your group to ask questions from the comfort of your home, school, or office while seeing select animal ambassadors up close!

    Feathered Friends

    What does it take to defy gravity? Take flight with us as we explore the amazing characteristics of our avian ambassadors. Meet our birds up-close and watch as they interact with enrichment activities and their trainers.

    Community Events and Festivals

    Reptile Display

    Looking for something to liven up your next festival or community event? Our outreach staff will set up a fun display to showcase some of the native reptiles of North Carolina. 

    Duration 4 hours


    Shark Display

    Sharks are not the fearsome eating machines portrayed in the movies. They are unique and intelligent animals whose incredible survival adaptations have helped them exist for millions of years. This hands-on display includes activities, crafts, games, and a blow-up 7-foot shark to dispel some of the most common shark myths.
