Coastal Conservation: Sharks

July 6-9, 2026

This 4-day field course in southeastern coastal North Carolina connects both formal and informal educators to the coastal ecology of the area, with a specific focus on shark conservation and ecology. Through this professional development course, teachers and informal educators, who have a professional certification earn Continuing Education Credits.  Participants will learn about shark conservation and ecology, practice using dichotomous keys for fish ID, go out on a boat (weather permitting), get hands-on experience setting longlines, and explore the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores.

Cost: $425
Cost of course includes lodging, meals, entrance fees, activities and equipment, instruction and related materials, and transportation. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the UNC Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Science.

Location: Participants meet for start of course at UNC Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Science July 6, at 10:30 a.m. The course will take place in various locations in and around the Aquarium and Morehead City/Bogue Banks area. The UNC Chapel Hill Institute of Marine Science will provide lodging which features bunk-style shared rooms and bathrooms.
